Response by SFA and MOH on food safety incident during Food Resilience Preparedness Programme

             The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) and the Ministry of Health have concluded investigations for the food safety incident during this year’s Food Resilience Preparedness Programme (FRPP), where 187 individuals (about 0.2 per cent of those who consumed the meals) were verified with gastroenteritis symptoms. Based on investigation findings, there is no conclusive evidence linking the reported gastroenteritis cases to the consumption of RTE meals.

2          This means that both food safety and clinical findings did not pinpoint the Ready-to-Eat (RTE) meals as the definitive cause of the incident. The laboratory testing of RTE meal samples, the environmental swabs of equipment and contact surfaces in SATS’ premises as well as stool samples from affected individuals and food handlers, showed no foodborne pathogens. SFA’s investigation of the manufacturing premises and processes also found no food safety lapses. Nonetheless, SFA is working closely with SATS to review and strengthen their food production processes.

3            Food safety is a joint responsibility. Everyone can play a part to ensure food safety through safe and hygienic practices, such as washing hands with soap thoroughly before consumption of food. 

4             SFA will continue to ensure a strong food safety regime and enhance Singapore’s food resilience.
